Research with Urban & Regional Development Institute

A meeting with Ir. Anderias Rentanubun, the Regent of the South East Moluccas Regency on December 8th 2016 ended a seven day intensive research done by Urban and Regional Development Institute, Cerita Anak Pulau and Terminal Benih. The research was held to capture real facts on how islanders in small islands such as Kei archipelago cope with effects resulted from social-politic and climate change, with focus on energy, water, and food crises.

We traveled to several villages in Kei Besar island, started from Ohoinangan, Nabaheng, Kilwair, Ohoiwirin, Watcin and Elat city to see the production and consumption pattern, how water and food were distributed, the effect of subsidized rice policy, how modern/industrial garbage impact the environment, and how local food were maintained.

Interviews with villagers, families and economy actors were done. We met productive farmers, a last brown sugar maker, striving villagers, environmentalist, economy actors, and two under-five children suffered from nutrition deficiency, whose mother admitted that they have skin disorders from consuming instant snacks.

Research in Kei Kecil island was conducted in Ohoitel, a place of vegetable producers. We interview and had a productive discussions with Mr. Isaias Ikanubun, Head of Social & Culture and Mr. Stefanus Eky H. Ruban, Head of Regional Development from Regional Body for Planning and Development (Bappeda), and also Mr. Martinus Larwuy, Head of City of Tual Food Security Agency.

Pertemuan dengan Ir. Anderias Rentanubun, Bupati Maluku Tenggara pada 08 Desember 2016 mengakhiri riset lapangan yang dilakukan secara intensif selama tujuh hari oleh Urban and Regional Development Institute, Cerita Anak Pulau, dan Terminal Benih. Riset ini dilakukan untuk merekam fakta lapangan tentang bagaimana penduduk di kepulauan kecil seperti kepulauan Kei mengatasi berbagai perubahan sosial politik dan perubahan iklim, dengan fokus pada krisis enerji, pangan, dan air.

Kami mengunjungi beberapa desa di Kei Besar, seperti desa Ohoinangan, Nabaheng, Kilwair, Ohoiwirin, Watcin dan Kota Elat untuk merekam pola produksi dan konsumsi masyarakat, bagaimana air dan pangan didistribusikan, dampak dari kebijakan raskin (beras miskin), bagaimana sampah industri modern mempengaruhi lingkungan, dan bagaimana panganan lokal dilestarikan.

Wawancara dengan penduduk kampung dan pelaku ekonomi pun dilakukan. Kami bertemu dengan petani-petani produktif, pembuat gula aren terakhir, penduduk desa yang berjuang, pelaku pelestarian lingkungan, pelaku ekonomi, dan dua balita gizi kurang yang ibunya mengakui penyakit kulit yang mereka derita adalah akibat konsumsi jajanan instan.

Riset di Kei Kecil dilakukan di Ohoitel, lokasi produsen sayur. Kami juga mewawancara dan berdiskusi produktif dengan Bapak Isaias Ikanubun, Kepala Bidang Sosial Budaya dan Bapak Stefanus Eky H. Ruban, Kepala Bidang Pengembangan Wilayah dari Bappeda, serta Bapak Martunus Larwuy, Kepala Ketahanan Pangan Kota Tual.
